What is Water-Fed Pole Window Cleaning? Here's Why It Gets Better Results

If you've watched our team at work in and around Bristol, you've probably noticed we use a long telescopic pole with a brush on the end rather than the traditional bucket and squeegee. It might look like we're cleaning your windows with plain water — and in a sense, we are. But the science behind our water purification is what makes all the difference.

How It Works

Our water-fed pole (WFP) system pumps purified water from a tank in our van, up through a carbon fibre pole, and out through jets in the brush head. The brush agitates the glass and frames while the pure water lifts and rinses the dirt away. The window is then left to dry naturally — no wiping, no squeegee, no streaks.

For our residential work, we can reach up to 45 feet from the ground, meaning we can clean the vast majority of properties (including Velux windows & skylights) safely and efficiently without ever needing to use a ladder. You might also see us working on commercial sites, reaching up to 70 feet or more - all from the safety of the ground!

The Key: Purified Water

Ordinary tap water contains between 150 and 400 parts per million (ppm) of dissolved minerals (Bristol is around 250-300). When it evaporates off a window, those minerals are left behind - that's where streaks and smears come from. We purify our water down to 0 ppm before it touches your glass, so when it dries, it leaves absolutely nothing behind.

We use a two-stage system: Reverse Osmosis (RO) to strip out the bulk of dissolved minerals, followed by Deionisation (DI) to bring the reading to a consistent 0 ppm.

How Does This Compare to Traditional Cleaning?

Traditional Cleaning

Our WFP System

Streak-free finish

Depends on technique

Consistent — no minerals, no residue

Upper floor windows

Requires ladders

Ground-based — no ladders needed

Frames and sills

Usually skipped

Cleaned as standard

Chemical residue

Yes — attracts dirt faster

None

How long results last

2–4 weeks typically

Often 4–6 weeks or longer

Because we use no detergent, there's no residue on the glass to attract new dirt — which is why our customers often find their windows stay cleaner for longer between visits. We also clean your frames and sills as standard, not just the glass.

Safety and Compliance

Safety is one of the main reasons we invested in WFP technology. Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, we're required to eliminate ladder work wherever a safer alternative exists — and this is it. No ladders means no risk of damage to your property and no liability concerns for you. We carry full public liability insurance and are happy to provide documentation on request.

A Few Common Questions

Does it work in the rain? With the British weather being what it is, this comes up a lot. Light to medium rain is generally fine, because rainwater is relatively low in minerals, it tends to dry without leaving significant marks on windows we've cleaned, which is why a fresh clean holds up well even after a shower. We'll always use our judgement and rearrange if conditions are likely to affect the quality of results.

Is it suitable for my property? It works well for the vast majority of homes and commercial buildings. If you have older wooden frames, leaded lights, or decorative stained glass, we'll assess these before starting and advise you honestly on the best approach.

Is it environmentally friendly? Yes — no chemicals, no detergents, nothing going down your drains except water carrying away dirt. For commercial customers with sustainability policies, we're happy to confirm this in writing.
